Veracruz, Mexico, iNet99.id – Tension reached a boiling point at Tuxpan Prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz as a violent riot erupted Saturday night (Aug 3), leaving seven inmates dead and eleven others seriously injured.
According to an official statement released by the Veracruz Public Security Department via its X (formerly Twitter) account, order has now been restored. The injured inmates are receiving medical treatment, and fires set during the chaos have been successfully extinguished.
Videos circulating online show thick plumes of smoke rising from within the prison compound. Other footage shared on social media reveals inmates with severe burn injuries.
Sources from within the prison claimed that the riot was sparked by a group of inmates rebelling against the criminal organization known as Grupo Sombra, which is allegedly extorting fellow inmates and their families.
Tuxpan Prison is known to be overcrowded. According to the latest official data from June, the facility housed 778 inmates—exceeding its intended capacity of 735.
Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the deadly incident, which once again highlights chronic issues plaguing Mexico's prison system, including overcrowding and the influence of criminal groups behind bars.
