South Africa, INET99.ID – A mass shooting carried out by several suspects at an unlicensed bar near South Africa’s capital in the early hours of Saturday killed at least 12 people. Police reported that three of the victims were children aged 3, 12, and 16.
A total of 13 others were injured and are currently being treated in the hospital. Police have not provided details regarding the ages or conditions of the injured victims.
South African police adjusted the death toll after confirming that a twelfth victim, who had been in critical condition, died while receiving hospital treatment.
The shooting took place at a bar operating without a license, located inside a hostel in the city of Saulsville, west of the administrative capital Pretoria, at around 4:15 a.m. local time on Saturday.
According to police reports, ten victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others died after arriving at the hospital. The incident has sparked widespread concern as it claimed the lives of children.
The children who died were a 3-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl. Police confirmed that all three were present at the location when the attack occurred.
Authorities are now searching for three male suspects believed to be directly involved in the brutal shooting. The suspects reportedly entered the hostel area and opened fire indiscriminately.
“We were informed that at least three unknown armed men entered this hostel where a group of people were drinking, and they started shooting randomly,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe to national broadcaster SABC.
Brigadier Mathe stated that the motive behind the mass shooting remains unclear. Although the incident occurred at around 4:15 a.m., police were only notified at around 6 a.m.***
