The woman, identified by German authorities as Ilona W., is accused of maintaining contact with a Russian intelligence officer working at the Russian Embassy in Berlin. Prosecutors said the alleged relationship had existed since at least October 2023.
According to the allegations, Ilona W. used her professional and personal contacts to gather information related to Germany's defense policy and defense industry. Investigators believe the information was intended for a Russian intelligence service.
Prosecutors also allege that the woman had access to political and military circles through her work as the head of a marketing agency and a lobbying organization. This access allegedly allowed her to identify people and events that could be useful to Russian intelligence.
German authorities further accuse Ilona W. of providing information about important political events and helping the Russian intelligence officer attend some events using false identities. The alleged purpose was to establish contacts that could later be useful to the Russian intelligence service.
The case is particularly sensitive because some of the alleged information concerned Germany's defense sector and policies connected to Russia's war against Ukraine. Prosecutors have previously said the suspect gathered information concerning defense industry sites, drone testing and planned deliveries of drones to Ukraine.
German authorities arrested Ilona W. in Berlin in January 2026. At the time, prosecutors said she was suspected of acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service and maintaining contact with a person working for Russian intelligence at the Russian Embassy.
The latest prosecution marks a further development in a series of German investigations involving suspected Russian espionage. Berlin has increasingly focused on possible intelligence operations, sabotage threats and other forms of alleged Russian activity inside Germany and across Europe.
The allegations against Ilona W. also involve her contacts with former German defense officials. Reuters reported in January that prosecutors believed she approached people she knew personally, including former employees of Germany's Defense Ministry, as part of the alleged information-gathering activity.
German authorities have not publicly identified the Russian intelligence officer by name. The Russian Embassy in Berlin did not immediately respond to requests for comment when the allegations were reported earlier this year.
The case comes as European governments remain increasingly concerned about Russian intelligence operations following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Germany has faced a series of investigations involving suspected espionage and alleged attempts to obtain sensitive information connected to military assistance and defense infrastructure.
