INET99.ID - The Indonesian Press Council strongly condemned the actions of the Israeli military in detaining Indonesian journalists along with civilian crew members participating in the humanitarian mission Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 bound for Gaza, Palestine.
The statement was officially conveyed through Press Council Statement Letter Number: 05/P-DP/V/2026 concerning the arrest of Indonesian journalists, issued on May 19, 2026.
In its statement, the Press Council described the detention of journalists and civilians involved in a humanitarian mission as an unacceptable act, particularly because the interception reportedly occurred in international waters.
The Press Council emphasized that the Indonesian journalists aboard the vessel were carrying out journalistic duties while also participating in an international humanitarian effort aimed at assisting civilians in Gaza.
The organization also urged the Government of Indonesia to immediately pursue diplomatic measures to secure the release of the detained journalists and Indonesian civilians currently held by Israeli authorities.
In addition to seeking their release, the Press Council called on the Indonesian government to ensure the safety of all Indonesian nationals involved in the mission, including facilitating their safe return to Indonesia.
In the first point of its official statement, the Press Council condemned the Israeli military’s interception and detention of Indonesian journalists and other civilian crew members while they were en route to Gaza through international waters.
Meanwhile, in the second point, the Press Council urged the Indonesian government to utilize all available diplomatic channels to obtain the release of the journalists and civilians detained by the Israeli military.
The council stated that diplomatic efforts are essential as part of the government's responsibility to protect Indonesian citizens participating in international humanitarian activities.
The Press Council further explained that Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 is an international civil society coalition delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
The aid carried by the mission reportedly included food supplies and medical equipment intended for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
According to the statement, the humanitarian mission represents part of a broader international solidarity movement supporting the people of Gaza amid a prolonged humanitarian crisis.
The Press Council’s statement also reflects its commitment to supporting the safety and protection of Indonesian journalists carrying out journalistic and humanitarian duties in conflict areas.
